Miscellaneous Information:

Cumbria Development Education Centre is a registered charity that inspires young people and their teachers to engage with the environment , take responsibility – individually and together – for the world in which they live, and contribute towards a fair and sustainable world. Our vision is for young people to have the skills and confidence to be able to face the challenges of today, to develop understanding and respect other people and places, and to make informed choices that have a positive impact on society and the world around them. We work with teachers, other practitioners, young people and their families to provide activities that encourage critical thinking and global awareness. Cumbria Development Education Centre is a member of the Consortium of Development Education Centres, one of a network of around 30 Development Education Centres across England. We work with schools across Cumbria, mainly - but not exclusively - primary schools. We provide training for teachers - our programme of full day and evening courses is available on our website, and we also provide bespoke whole-school INSET. Our courses include many elements of global learning: Fairtrade, School Linking, Global Citizenship, Outdoor Learning, Forest Schools, environmental issues etc. An important approach for us is Philosophy for Children, and we work directly with young people to develop critical and collaborative thinking skills.

We have a wide range of resources, topic boxes and books available either for sale, or to borrow through our Subscription Service. Schools and other organisations can borrow by subscribing. We also deliver funded projects which are free for schools. We are currently delivering two large EU funded projects called Global Literacy, and the World from our doorstep, along with European and African partners.
